By Musa Muhammad Kutama, Calabar
An Islamic scholar, Ustaz Auwal Abdulkarim, has urged Muslims to observe fasting on the 9th and 10th days of Muharram 1448 AH, highlighting the spiritual rewards and blessings associated with the sacred days.
Speaking during a sermon at the Izala Mosque on Mary Slessor Street, Calabar, Cross River State, Ustaz Abdulkarim said fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram is a highly recommended Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Quoting from the Hadith of the Prophet, he explained that those who observe the fast on these two days stand to receive immense rewards and divine blessings from Allah.
The cleric noted that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) regularly observed the fast of Ashura and expressed his intention to fast on both the 9th and 10th days of Muharram if he lived to witness another year.
According to him, the tradition of fasting on Ashura dates back to the time of Prophet Musa (Moses), peace be upon him.
He explained that Prophet Muhammad later reaffirmed and emphasized the practice as an important Sunnah for Muslims.
Ustaz Abdulkarim therefore called on Muslims to take advantage of the opportunity presented by the sacred month of Muharram to seek Allah’s forgiveness, increase acts of worship, and strengthen their faith through voluntary fasting and prayers.
He also urged the faithful to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in their communities and the nation at large.
