In a move aimed at identifying and addressing gaps and challenges in blood transfusion services in Kano state, the State Technical Working Committee on Blood Transfusion has been officially inaugurated.

At the inauguration ceremony today, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, explained that the formation of the committee was driven by the need to ensure the safety and efficiency of blood transfusion services in the state.

A statement issued by Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Ministry’s Information Officer, quoted the Commissioner as saying that the selection of the committee members was based on their competence. Dr. Yusuf expressed confidence that the committee would meet the high expectations placed upon them.

“Being part of such a historic committee is a significant responsibility, one that will be recorded in the history of Kano state. I believe this will serve as a valuable documentation of all the important activities you will carry out,” Dr. Yusuf remarked. “Anyone who later reviews the history of blood transfusion in Kano will find the names of all of you.”

While congratulating the committee members, the Commissioner urged them to work diligently and tirelessly to deliver exceptional service to the people of Kano state.

He also commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his unwavering support and focus on the welfare of the state’s citizens, noting with satisfaction the remarkable achievements made in a short time.

Dr. Musbahu Rabi’u, the Chairman of the Committee and Director of Medical Services at the Hospitals Management Board, expressed his gratitude to Dr. Labaran for entrusting them with such an important responsibility. He assured the Commissioner that the committee would give their best effort to fulfill the tasks entrusted to them.

The committee’s terms of reference include providing technical expertise and advice on blood transfusion-related matters, developing and implementing guidelines, policies, and standards, as well as initiating quality improvement measures.

The committee will also collaborate with stakeholders, including healthcare providers, health facilities, private blood banks, partners, and regulatory bodies, on issues related to blood transfusion services. Furthermore, the committee is tasked with providing training and capacity-building support for healthcare workers and blood bank staff.

The committee members include the Directors of Medical Laboratory Services, Nursing Services, and Admin and General Services at the Hospitals Management Board. Other members include representatives from the Private Health Institutions Management Agency, Primary Healthcare Management Board, the Drugs and Medical Consumables Supply Agency, and the Guild of Medical Directors. Additionally, representatives from academia (BUK/AKTH), partners, and a renowned microbiologist are also part of the committee. Dr. Hauwa Ibrahim, a Consultant Hematologist, will serve as the committee’s secretary.

The committee has the authority to co-opt any stakeholder as the need arises.
