From Muawuya Bala Idris, Katsina

The Katsina State Government has taken a significant step toward improving financial literacy and expanding banking services through a strategic partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

During a high-level meeting in Katsina, Hajiya Bilkisu Sulaiman Ibrahim, Special Adviser to the Governor on Banking and Finance, met with Alhaji Muhammad Sani, Branch Controller of the CBN in Katsina, to establish a framework for sustained collaboration between the state government and financial institutions.

Hajiya Bilkisu emphasized the department’s ongoing engagement with commercial banks to strengthen financial services delivery across the state.

“We have already met with all major commercial banks operating in Katsina to build productive relationships that will ultimately benefit our citizens,” she said. “We are ready to formally invite the CBN to all banking sector meetings because your input is critical to advancing our financial initiatives at the state level.”

She also raised the issue of the licensing status of Katsina Amana Microfinance Bank and appealed to the CBN for urgent intervention.

“Our department is committed to working with the CBN on financial inclusion and capacity-building programs. This partnership will play a vital role in improving financial literacy and expanding access to banking services for our people,” she added.

In his response, Alhaji Muhammad Sani praised the state’s proactive approach and described the engagement as a welcome development.

“This is truly refreshing,” he said. “In my tenure here, this is the first time a government agency has reached out in this manner. Bridging the communication gap between the government and financial institutions is both necessary and timely for economic development.”

Sani expressed optimism that Katsina’s model of engagement could serve as a blueprint for other states.

“I hope this initiative is replicated elsewhere. Our region faces persistent challenges stemming from low financial awareness. Enhancing financial literacy and access to banking services is essential for development,” he stated.

Concluding the session, Hajiya Bilkisu reaffirmed the department’s readiness to support CBN programs across the state and requested timely updates on policy changes.

“We urge the CBN to keep us informed of new policies or initiatives so we can effectively carry out awareness and advocacy campaigns that benefit our citizens,” she said.
