From Muawuya Bala Idris, Katsina
The Katsina State Grand Khadi, Professor Mohammed Kabir Abubakar, has commended Governor Dikko Umar Radda for the timely release of funds to the state judiciary.
He made the commendation at the commencement of the 2025/2026 (1447 A.H.) Sharia Legal Year held in Katsina.
According to him, the release of funds in line with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) reflects the governor’s commitment to ensuring the independence and financial autonomy of the judiciary.
“We commend Governor Radda for complying with the constitutional requirements regarding the independence and autonomy of the state judiciary,” Professor Abubakar stated.
The Grand Khadi also applauded the Katsina State House of Assembly for its deep concern in strengthening the establishment of Islamic justice across the state.
He, however, appealed to the government to increase allowances for overseas seminars and training, citing inflation and exchange rate fluctuations as challenges affecting judicial officers.
Reviewing the performance of the court in the past legal year, Professor Abubakar disclosed that the Sharia Court of Appeal successfully registered and disposed of several cases, motions, and applications.
He said the welfare of staff had been given adequate attention, with entitlements settled and many junior staff promoted to various grade levels, while senior officers were recommended to the Judicial Service Commission for elevation.
The Grand Khadi further revealed that the Court sponsored seminars, workshops, and training sessions in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute (NJI) to enhance staff capacity.
He added that the Sharia Court of Appeal had completed the construction of a new auditorium and chambers for newly appointed Khadis expected to assume duties this year.
Professor Abubakar also announced plans to review the Court’s rules based on recommendations from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Funtua Branch, to strengthen judicial processes.
He expressed satisfaction with the harmonious relationship between the Bar and the Bench in the state and announced the revival of the Sharia Commission, noting that new members would soon be inaugurated to resume duties.
