Katsina State Government has introduced a new policy to address the issue of teacher absenteeism in public schools.
The state’s Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) will now deduct a quarter of a percent of the salary of any teacher who is absent from work for 10 or more days in a month.
The policy was announced by the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Kabir Magaji Gafia, who stated that the decision was made after a meeting with Education Secretaries from all 34 local government areas.
“We have resolved that, effective immediately, any teacher who is absent from work for 10 days or more in a month will have a quarter of a percent of their salary deducted,” Gafia said.
He further explained that the policy has already been implemented in some local government areas, such as Mashi and Batsari, where the salaries of several teachers have been affected.
Gafia emphasized that the policy will be phased in across all 34 local government areas and that teachers are urged to adhere to their duties to avoid salary deductions.
