The Kebbi State House of Assembly has rejected claims by former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, alleging that the state government imported political thugs and mercenaries.

At an emergency press conference in Birnin Kebbi on Friday, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Muhammad Usman, described the allegations as baseless, unfounded, and mischievous.

Usman said Kebbi State is renowned for its peaceful environment, stressing that any attempt to tarnish this reputation is an attack on both the government and the people.

He alleged that the claims are intended to distract the administration from its developmental achievements and to create fear and tension among residents.

The controversy erupted after Malami accused some political actors in Kebbi State of allegedly using imported thugs to intimidate opponents and manipulate local politics.

He also claimed that certain officials were complicit in these activities, a statement that triggered widespread reactions from political and civil society groups.

The Speaker of the House, however, rejected the claims, insisting that there is no record of such activities in the state and that security agencies have found no evidence linking the government to the alleged misconduct.

Describing the claims as malicious and unsubstantiated, Usman called on residents to remain calm and urged security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

He also insisted that Malami should face prosecution if found culpable, warning that such action would serve as a deterrent to others.
