From Musa Muhammad Kutama, Calabar

A non-governmental association, Kutama First, has dissociated itself from an individual who has allegedly been parading himself as a family member of the Sarkin Ruwa na Kutama, the Chief Overseer of Waterways in Kutama.

In a statement issued to our reporter by Hon. Ado Lawan Kutama, Vice Chairman of Kutama First, the association said it did not recognise the individual as an indigene or representative of the community.

“We wish to categorically distance our community from the statements and political activities of an individual who claims to be an indigene of our town.

“He calls himself Sarkin Ruwa na Kutama. Sincerely, we do not recognise him as a son of our community,” the statement said.

It added that the individual’s personal disagreements or confrontations with the government should not in any way be regarded as the position or opinion of the people of Kutama.

Hon. Lawan Kutama further said, “Everyone has the right to express his personal views, but no individual should misrepresent himself as a representative of a community without the recognition and consent of that community.

“We therefore completely disassociate ourselves from his statements and actions and urge the public to treat them as his personal views and not those of our town.”

He stressed that the community stands for peace, unity, respect and responsible representation, and called on individuals with such attitudes to fear God and respect themselves.
