The Managing Director of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Barrister Olawaseun Faleye, has called for the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digitalization to enhance workplace safety and health in Nigeria.
Faleye made the call during the Occupational Safety and Health Forum (OSHF) organized by the NSITF to mark the World Day for Safety and Health at Work. The event took place on Tuesday at the Merit House, Abuja.
He emphasized that AI and digital technologies can significantly improve worker safety and strengthen health systems in workplaces.
AI and digitalization can promote safety and health in the workplace,” Faleye said.
He stressed the importance of continuous learning and training to ensure workers are proficient in using these technologies. Faleye also highlighted the need for compliance with ethical standards and the implementation of appropriate safeguards.
Reaffirming NSITF’s commitment to workers’ welfare, he thanked the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) and other stakeholders for their consistent support of the Fund’s programmes and initiatives.
Faleye also commended the organizing team for successfully coordinating the forum.
In her welcome remarks, the Executive Director of Operations at NSITF, Mrs. Mojisolaoluwa Alli-Macaulay, expressed pride in leading an initiative that aligns with Section 1(f) of the Employees Compensation Act.
” Our goal is to unite the efforts and resources of all relevant stakeholders to prevent workplace injuries, disabilities, and fatalities while upholding occupational health and safety standards,” she stated.
She described the forum as a platform for experts, practitioners, and stakeholders to brainstorm best practices and address challenges related to AI and digitalization in workplace safety and well-being.
According to her, the aim is to equip Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) professionals with the knowledge and skills required to harness AI and digital tools, while effectively tackling associated challenges to create safer and healthier workplaces across Nigeria.
Delivering his goodwill message, the Director General of NECA, Mr. Smart Oyerinde, noted that many workplace environments in Nigeria are still in poor condition.
He emphasized that the forum provided a valuable opportunity to reaffirm commitment to workers’ safety and deepen partnerships among key stakeholders.
The forum, themed “Revolutionising Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalization at Work,” was organized by the Occupational Safety and Health Department of the NSITF to explore the integration of AI and digital tools in promoting workplace safety.
Dignitaries at the event included the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Safety Standards, Hon. David Idris Zakarias; a representative of the Senate Committee Chairman; the Clerk of the House Committee; and several other stakeholders from public and private sectors.
