Plateau State University, Bokkos, has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to environmental sustainability and campus protection through a dynamic student-led tree-planting campaign.

On April 16, the university received a donation of 35 seedlings from the Students’ Union, marking a substantial contribution to the ongoing initiative.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Shedrack Best, praised the students’ efforts, describing them as a “clear indication of vision” and commending the initiative for its forward-thinking approach.

During the presentation of the seedlings to the university management, Mr. Sunday Weng Maju, leader of the Environmental Sciences Students’ Union at PLASU, explained that the campaign is designed to promote environmental sustainability and ensure that future generations benefit from a healthier ecosystem.

He noted that the initiative was inspired by the teachings and values instilled by the university’s Faculty of Environmental Sciences.

Associate Professor Solomon Wuyep, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, also applauded the students for their dedication to creating a “micro-planet,” in line with the faculty’s longstanding tradition of monthly tree planting.

He emphasised the wide-ranging benefits of tree planting, including improved environmental health and climate regulation, and expressed gratitude for the university’s continued support.

Prof. Best further highlighted the benefits for PLASU, noting that the trees will provide infrastructural protection through windbreaks and contribute to climate control.

“PLASU is very open and vulnerable to strong winds, and several times we’ve had our roofs blown off. But with initiatives like these, we will soon not have to worry about this,” he said.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Galadima Pyefa, he added, “It’s a great thing you’ve done.”
