A recent investigation by Accountability Lab has exposed potential irregularities in government projects in Plateau State.
One such project, the Government Secondary School Zagun in Bassa Local Government Area, has come under scrutiny.
The school, which was earmarked for a significant renovation in 2024, appears to have seen little to no progress.
The Principal, Mr. Akuten Adinimil Achaka, confirmed that there were no new structures or buildings added to the school premises.
Achaka revealed that the existing structures, including the science lab and administrative block, were constructed during the Jonah David Jang administration.
While some renovations were carried out by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in 2016/2017 and 2019, the major infrastructure projects predate the current administration.
The only recent interventions at the school came from Adlicent Girls Child Assisted (AGILE) Plateau State, which provided a computer lab and solar power and stocked the science lab with equipment.
The Principal expressed disappointment that the school had not benefited from any new projects in recent years, despite being listed in government procurement processes.
He appealed to the government to complete ongoing projects and provide additional support to improve the learning environment for students.
The investigation raises serious questions about the transparency and accountability of government spending in Plateau State.
It highlights the need for stricter oversight mechanisms to ensure that public funds are utilized effectively and that projects are completed as promised.
