The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Interior, Hon. Abdullahi Aliyu Ahmed, has cautioned grocery traders against exploiting fellow Muslims by inflating food prices during the holy month of Ramadan.
In his Ramadan message to Nigerian Muslims at home and abroad, Ahmed emphasized that such exploitation contradicts the tenets of Islam and the spirit of the sacred month.
A statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Sardauna Francis, quoted Ahmed—who also holds the traditional title of First Dujiman Katsina—as urging traders to maintain fair pricing on essential food items.
He noted that as food prices trend downward, sellers should not take advantage of the season to impose unnecessary hikes, ensuring relief for the fasting population.
Ahmed, who represents Musawa/Matazu Federal Constituency, called on traders and all Muslims to uphold the best virtues of Islam, including kindness and compassion in their dealings.
“As we observe this important spiritual period, I urge traders who habitually raise prices at the start of Ramadan to desist from such practices,” he stated.
He also encouraged Muslims to remain devoted to the Five Pillars of Islam and to use the holy month as an opportunity to pray for the nation’s peace, progress, and prosperity.
Describing Ramadan as a time for deep reflection, piety, and the rejection of actions that harm humanity, the lawmaker urged believers to embody the virtues of selflessness and righteousness throughout the season.
