Vice President Kashim Shettima says the timely implementation of the Special Agro–Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) programme will trigger an industrial revolution in Nigeria’s agriculture sector, boost innovation, and foster inclusive prosperity.

Shettima, represented by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, stated this at the groundbreaking ceremony of the SAPZ project in Ijaiye, Ibadan, Oyo State.

According to a statement by the ministry’s Assistant Director of Information, Ezeaja Ikemefuna, the Vice President said the project would create agro-industrial hubs to empower farmers and processors, stimulate local economies, and make Nigeria competitive in global markets.

“This initiative is more than infrastructure; it is a bold declaration that Nigeria’s future lies in transforming its abundant agricultural resources into value-added products that drive industries, create jobs, and uplift farmers,” he said.

He described SAPZ as a cornerstone of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, built on restoring national dignity, unlocking economic potential, and creating opportunities for all.

Shettima noted that the programme is a product of collaboration between the Federal Government, state governments, and international development partners, including the African Development Bank, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, and the Islamic Development Bank.

He commended Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for his commitment to the state’s development, adding that the event reflected the spirit of partnership needed for national progress.

Shettima also disclosed that he recently showcased the SAPZ initiative at the United Nations Food Systems Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he sought additional funding to boost productivity in participating states.

The Vice President said plans were underway to expand the programme to 27 more states in phases, starting with 10 by the first quarter of 2026, in collaboration with AfDB.

The ceremony was jointly flagged off by Senator Kyari and Governor Makinde.
