From Umar Danladi Ado, Sokoto

The looming crisis spurred on the Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), between the factions of former governor Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa and erstwhile governor of the state, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

It could be recalled that the state PDP chairman, Bello Goronyo accuses the former governor of engaging in anti-party activities.

The PDP suffered defeats in the 2023 gubernatorial elections by the opposition APC which resulted in the emergence of Ahmed Aliyu as the state governor.

However, as the crisis looms, the Bafarawa faction has now appointed Professor Hamza Maishanu as their chairman to coordinate the activities of the party within Bafarawa’s camp, while by extension rejecting Bello Goronyo’s leadership who belong to the Sen Tambuwal’s camp.

The Bafarawa PDP faction started opposing the party’s state leadership under the Chairmanship of Bello Goronyo due to his allegations that some individuals in the party were sabotaging the party and receiving funds to distract the PDP in the state.

The Bafarawa faction has accused Goronyo of not addressing these issues and instead covering them up.

This development suggests that the PDP crisis in Sokoto State has deepened, and the 2027 elections are already shaping up to be contentious.

Bafarawa group therefore resolved and appointed Professor Hamza Maishanu as their leader of the PDP, to lead the party’s supporters and activities in the state.

This appointment was made to solidify Professor Maishanu’s position as the leader of the PDP group in Sokoto State and to oversee the party’s activities in all 23 local government areas of the state.

This development is seen as a move to strengthen the Bafarawa political party’s structure across the state and to consolidate support for the PDP in Sokoto Statdepenn
