From Umar Danladi Ado, Sokoto

The Sokoto State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, in collaboration with UNICEF, has commenced a five-day intensive training on programme-based budgeting to replace the state’s traditional budgeting system.

The workshop, holding at Jamvaley Hotel and Resort in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, aims to promote efficiency, effectiveness, and accountability in public spending.

Declaring the event open, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Abubakar Muhammad Zayyana, thanked Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his “unwavering support” in moving the state to the next level. He also commended UNICEF for its continuous partnership in the state’s development.

Zayyana said the training would guide the preparation of the 2026 budget in line with the State Fiscal Transparency Accountability (SFTA) framework, focusing on results-oriented spending that benefits vulnerable populations, especially women and children.

“This workshop is a clear indication that Sokoto is ready to enhance its budgeting approach and implement projects that directly impact people’s lives,” he said.

Participants include senior ministry officials, the Permanent Secretary, Hajiya Maryam Ahmad Barade, directors, UNICEF representatives, and other stakeholders.
