From Umar Danladi Ado, Sokoto

The Sokoto State Water Board has completed emergency repairs on a major water pipeline that burst earlier this week, flooding parts of the city and disrupting water supply.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Sokoto, the General Manager of the Board, Engr. Aminu Haruna Mika’ilu, said the incident occurred after a high-pressure surge from the main pump caused the pipeline to rupture, turning the affected area into what residents described as a river.

According to the statement, water gushed several metres into the air from the damaged pipeline.

“Alhamdulillah, we give thanks to Allah for giving us the ability to complete this work this evening, Friday, 22/05/2026,” the statement read.

The Board explained that the repair operation continued day and night, with 15 pumping machines deployed to evacuate floodwater before engineers could access and repair the damaged section.

Officials attributed the swift intervention to the cooperation between the Water Board’s technical team and the Sokoto State Government.

The statement quoted Engr. Mika’ilu as commending the technical staff for their dedication, resilience and expertise in handling the emergency.

It also praised Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto for his prompt response after being informed of the incident, noting that he immediately approved all resources required for the operation.

“We pray to Allah to reward him abundantly, Ameen,” the statement added.

With the repairs completed, the Board said normal water supply would gradually resume across affected areas and appealed to residents for patience during the stabilization process.

The Board further assured the public that additional updates would be provided as work continues to improve the water distribution system.

The pipeline burst is one of several infrastructure challenges faced by Sokoto State this year as the government intensifies efforts to expand and maintain water supply facilities in the state capital and surrounding local government areas.
