Kano State has reaffirmed its dedication to upholding press freedom and promoting ethical journalism as the global community commemorates World Press Freedom Day 2025.

This year’s theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” highlights the transformative influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on journalism.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration has consistently emphasized the vital role of a free, independent, and pluralistic media in strengthening democracy and driving development. “Our resolve to create an enabling environment for journalists and media practitioners to carry out their work effectively and without fear is steadfast,” said a statement released by the state government.

The administration also noted the growth in the number of broadcast media outlets, particularly radio and online news platforms, as a reflection of its accommodating stance towards the media.

In his statement, Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, underscored the importance of open dialogue between the state government and media leaders. “We have maintained consistent communication with media stakeholders to ensure transparency and mutual understanding.

Our government has been a partner in providing logistical and moral support to media groups and capacity-building initiatives,” Waiya added.

Recognizing the evolving nature of the media, Kano State has also supported the formation of the Online Media Chapel, acknowledging the significant role of digital journalism in modern information dissemination. This initiative aligns with the state’s commitment to a diversified and robust media landscape.

As AI continues to shape the future of journalism, the Kano State Government remains focused on ensuring that these technological advances contribute positively to press freedom.

n response, the government calls on media practitioners to uphold the highest ethical standards and ensure that all information shared with the public is accurate, fair, and serves the public interest.

“The importance of ethical conduct cannot be overstated as we navigate the complex interplay of AI in the media,” the statement noted.

On World Press Freedom Day, the Kano State Government praised the resilience, courage, and contributions of journalists within the state and across the globe.

The government expressed its commitment to furthering partnerships with media professionals based on mutual respect, professionalism, and a shared vision of creating an informed and enlightened society.
