Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Sokoto State, Comrade Aminu Umar Ahmad, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ahmad, the former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Sokoto State Council, announced his defection to the APC on Wednesday.
“I want to thank the Labour Party for giving me the opportunity to contest the 2023 elections under its platform and for the support I received from its members.
“The decision to resign was personal and was not influenced by anyone,” he said.
Ahmad, who was also the LP governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections, said he had concluded his consultations and was now aligning with the APC at both the state and federal levels ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in an interview in Sokoto on Wednesday, Ahmad confirmed that he had resigned from the Labour Party earlier in the day, citing personal reasons.
“From what I have seen, I am putting my weight behind an APC government. I will formalise everything officially, but for now, I have already defected,” he stated.
On the 2027 elections, the former LP candidate urged Nigerians to vote based on the capacity and credibility of individuals rather than political party platforms.
“The party is just a platform. What matters is electing credible and honest leaders who have the people at heart.
“We must begin to demand accountability from those in office today over the promises they made since 2023,” he said.
He added that democracy in Nigeria would only thrive if voters focused on competence and performance rather than sentiments.
Political observers said Ahmad’s defection, coming with his background in both politics and labour, is expected to boost the APC’s structure in Sokoto as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
