The Sokoto East Senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 general elections, Alhaji Umaru Ajiyan Isa, has called on Nigeria’s security agencies to adopt a more offensive strategy to end banditry and other violent crimes across the country.
Speaking with journalists in Sokoto on Saturday, Ajiya, the immediate past Chief Finance Officer (CFO) of NNPC Ltd, said the current reactive approach to security is no longer effective in addressing the growing threat of insecurity.
He argued that recent attacks in different parts of the country highlight the urgent need for a new operational strategy that focuses on proactively targeting criminal hideouts.
“We must take the war to the criminals in their hideouts. This defensive approach is no longer working. Our security forces need better intelligence, better equipment, and the political will to dominate,” he said.
Ajiya also pledged that if elected to the Senate in 2027, he would prioritize security funding and push for increased budgetary allocations for the military, police, and other security agencies.
He further vowed to ensure that security funds are released promptly after appropriation and properly monitored to prevent delays that could hinder operations.
“My experience as CFO of NNPC taught me how to track money. Nigerians deserve to know that every kobo voted for security is actually used to protect lives and property,” he said.
The APC candidate also emphasized the link between insecurity, unemployment, and poverty, promising to attract federal projects and job opportunities to Sokoto State as part of efforts to reduce the recruitment base for criminal groups.
Commending the Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, Ajiya praised his investments in security infrastructure and his efforts to complement federal security operations.
“He came fully prepared for the top job and is performing very well. I am happy with this development,” he added.
