From Maawuya Bala Idris, Katsina

The Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIOTA) is working with relevant stakeholders to come up with a national policy on the transport sector.

President/Chairman Council of the institute Prince (Dr) Segun Ochuko Obayendo revealed this at the North West Zonal Conference in Katsina State with the theme ‘Promoting Ethics And Professionalism In Transport A Key To Economic Development.’

He said the policy is necessary to regulate and provide direction for the transport sector in Nigeria.

Ochuko said the policy will also ensure ethics and professionalism are adhered to for the running of the sector.

According to him, because of the absence of such a policy, the transport sector has no regulatory framework to operate.

He lamented that states are operating differently with no national policy on the transport sector which allows unprofessional to hijack the sector.

He said the conference was designed to educate the stakeholders on the need to operate and work under the proposed policy.

Earlier Acting Governor of Katsina state, Faruk Lawal Jobe noted that the conference will provide an opportunity to address challenges facing the transport sector.

Jobe commended the institute for promoting excellence, innovation and professionalism in the transport sector.

He said the Katsina state government has introduced reforms to provide direction and address challenges facing the State Transport Authority.
