In a democracy, the true measure of representation extends beyond campaign promises and political rhetoric. It lies in the quality of laws enacted, the responsiveness to the needs of constituents and the tangible projects that improve people’s lives.

As members of the 10th National Assembly approach three years in office, constituents across Nigeria are taking stock of the performance of their elected representatives.

For Honourable Hassan Shehu Hussain, the member representing Nassarawa Federal Constituency of Kano State in the House of Representatives, the past three years have been characterised by legislative engagement, constituency development and programmes aimed at improving the welfare of the people.

Since his inauguration in 2023, the first-term lawmaker has maintained an active presence in legislative proceedings while simultaneously pursuing projects and interventions across the constituency.

His approach has focused on education, healthcare, infrastructure, youth empowerment, economic development and advocacy on national issues affecting Kano State.

One of the defining features of his tenure has been his legislative contributions. Hon. Shehu has sponsored bills seeking the establishment of a Federal Vocational Skills Acquisition College in Yankaba, a proposal designed to equip young Nigerians with practical and technical skills for self-reliance.

He also sponsored a bill for the establishment of a National Institute for Cardiovascular Disease Research and Treatment in Kano, reflecting growing concerns over the increasing burden of heart-related diseases in the country.

In addition, he has sponsored legislative proposals relating to mortgage banking reforms, substance abuse prevention and treatment, and amendments to the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, demonstrating an interest in both economic reforms and social protection.

Beyond sponsoring bills, the lawmaker has used parliamentary motions to draw federal attention to critical issues affecting Kano and the nation.

Among them are calls for the rehabilitation and better funding of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, one of Northern Nigeria’s foremost referral hospitals.

He has also advocated the revival of the Bompai, Sharada and Challawa industrial estates, once the backbone of Kano’s industrial economy but now struggling due to years of neglect and declining investment.

His interventions have further extended to calls for investigations into customs revenue leakages and the activities of the Bureau of Public Enterprises, reflecting concerns about accountability, transparency and prudent management of public resources.

Education remains one of the strongest pillars of his constituency programmes. Recognising that many families struggle to finance their children’s education, Hon. Shehu has facilitated scholarships and financial assistance for students at various levels.

Hundreds of beneficiaries have reportedly received support for WAEC, NECO and JAMB registration fees, while others in tertiary institutions have benefited from tuition and registration assistance.

The lawmaker has also facilitated the construction and renovation of classrooms, supplied educational materials and supported initiatives aimed at improving the learning environment in public schools.

These interventions are intended to reduce barriers to education and encourage greater school enrolment and retention among young people.

Healthcare has equally received attention during his tenure. In addition to his legislative advocacy, constituency interventions have included support for primary healthcare facilities and the provision of medical equipment in selected communities.

These efforts are designed to strengthen access to basic healthcare services, particularly for low-income families.

Infrastructure development has also remained central to his representation. Across Nassarawa Federal Constituency, roads have been rehabilitated to improve mobility and ease transportation.

Communities affected by inadequate water supply have benefited from the installation of solar-powered boreholes and other water projects, while electricity infrastructure has been strengthened through the distribution of transformers to improve power supply.

Understanding that sustainable development requires economic opportunities, Hon. Shehu has expanded empowerment programmes targeting women, youths and small-scale entrepreneurs.

Through the distribution of grants, vocational tools, business equipment and other forms of support, beneficiaries have been assisted in establishing or expanding their businesses, thereby promoting self-employment and economic independence.

These initiatives have particularly targeted artisans, traders, women-led enterprises and unemployed youths, groups widely recognised as critical to local economic growth and poverty reduction.

Security has remained another area of consistent advocacy. At a time when many parts of the country continue to grapple with insecurity, the lawmaker has repeatedly called for increased recruitment into security agencies, improved funding for security operations and stronger collaboration with community-based security initiatives.

He has argued that sustainable peace remains essential for economic growth and national development.

While supporters point to these legislative efforts and constituency projects as evidence of effective representation, critics, as is common in every democratic setting, continue to demand even greater interventions in areas such as employment generation, urban renewal and expanded social welfare programmes.

Nevertheless, the scope of activities associated with Hon. Hussain Hassan Shehu over the past three years has ensured that his stewardship remains visible both within the National Assembly and across Nassarawa Federal Constituency.

As preparations for another electoral cycle gradually gather momentum, constituents will ultimately determine whether these efforts have met their expectations.

Their verdict will depend not only on completed projects and sponsored legislation but also on how effectively those initiatives have improved lives and addressed the everyday challenges facing the people.

For now, Hon. Hassan Shehu Hussain’s three years in office present a record of legislative participation, community development and sustained engagement with the aspirations of the people he was elected to serve.
