From Ahmad Ibrahim, Gusau
The federal highway linking Gusau to Funtua in Zamfara and Katsina states has become a death trap as a result of the rampant activities of armed bandits almost daily.
Triumph correspondent reports that the major road has been facing attacks for over one month as the bandits usually block the road morning and afternoon.
Our correspondent gathered that, despite both military and police checkpoints from Funtua to Gusau, many commuters have been kidnapped while travelling on the road within the last month to date.
In an interview with Triumph correspondent, a traveller identified as Malam Ibrahim Hussaini described the situation as worrisome, calling on the federal government to look into the matter urgently.
“As you can see, we have no alternative road to follow from Funtua to Gusau because it is the only way, and it’s unfortunate that almost every day, the terrorists block the road, kidnap travellers and even kill some of them,” he said.
Malam Ibrahim Hussaini described the major checkpoints mounted on the road as useless and urged the federal government to reshuffle them with highly committed security personnel for the safety of travellers.
“We don’t have confidence in the security personnel situated on the road, and there is a need for the federal government to change them and bring those who are ready to safeguard travellers and fight these dreaded terrorists who terrorise the road almost daily,” he added.
Triumph reports that some of the flashpoints include Magazu – Tsafe, Magazu – Kucheri, and Kucheri – Yankara among other places.
In the same vein, the bandits Thursday blocked the highway along Tazame village of Kwatarkwashi and killed many people in the village along with one police officer identified as Akilu Liman.
