A human rights lawyer and activist, Zubair Muhammad, on Thursday urged Nigerians to recommit to democratic values and human rights as the nation marked Democracy Day.

Speaking at a press conference organised by the Human Rights Research and Advocacy Centre (HURRAC) at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Kano, Muhammad, who doubles as the National Coordinator of HURRAC, said June 12 should serve as a day of reflection and renewed commitment to democracy.

“We must honour the memories of those who struggled for Nigeria’s independence and democratic freedom,” he said. “At a time when neighbouring countries are grappling with military takeovers, Nigerians must unite to protect and strengthen our democratic institutions.”

The lawyer, who is also an academic, called on parents, school owners, and educators to inculcate human rights values and democratic principles in children and students from an early age.

“Our future depends on how well we prepare our young people today,” he said. “Embedding a culture of human rights and democracy in our schools is key to sustaining the gains we have made as a nation.”

Muhammad disclosed that HURRAC had facilitated the establishment of Human Rights Clubs in selected secondary schools across Kano State to instill democratic values in young minds and raise awareness about their rights.

He said the group planned to expand the initiative to 100 more schools before the end of the year, describing the move as part of efforts to build a generation grounded in civic responsibility, respect for the rule of law, and peaceful coexistence.

“Democracy is not just a system of government; it is a culture that must be nurtured, defended, and passed on,” he added.
