The Plateau State Government has procured about 500 truckloads of fertiliser for the 2026 farming season and reduced the selling price of a 50kg bag to N20,000 as part of efforts to boost agricultural productivity, improve farmers’ incomes and strengthen food security across the state.

The subsidised price represents a sharp reduction from the current market price of between N50,000 and N53,000 per 50kg bag.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Dr. Gyang Bere.

According to the statement, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has approved the procurement of the fertiliser as part of his administration’s commitment to agricultural transformation, food security and the economic empowerment of farmers across Plateau State.

Although the official launch of the 2026 Fertiliser Subsidy Programme is scheduled for Friday, July 10, 2026, the governor has directed that the sale of the subsidised fertiliser should commence immediately to enable farmers benefit from the ongoing planting season.

The government said the subsidy was designed to ensure that farmers have timely access to quality farm inputs at affordable prices, thereby reducing production costs and encouraging increased agricultural output.

Governor Mutfwang disclosed that the fertiliser would be distributed to farmers across the 17 local government areas of the state, adding that the intervention is aimed at lowering the high cost of agricultural production, improving productivity and enhancing food security.

He described agriculture as a major pillar of his administration’s development agenda and a critical driver of economic growth, employment generation and rural development.

The governor explained that the fertiliser subsidy was introduced in response to persistent concerns by farmers over the rising cost of farming inputs and reflects the government’s determination to make agriculture more productive, profitable and sustainable.

He noted that the initiative aligns with the agricultural development objectives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu under the Renewed Hope Agenda and complements efforts to cushion the impact of economic hardship while increasing food production nationwide.

Governor Mutfwang expressed confidence that the programme would significantly reduce production costs, improve crop yields, increase farmers’ profit margins and advance Plateau State’s drive towards food sufficiency and sustainable agricultural development.

He urged farmers across the state to take full advantage of the subsidy programme, assuring them of his administration’s continued commitment to policies and programmes that support agricultural productivity, improve rural livelihoods and position Plateau State as a leading hub for agriculture and agribusiness in Nigeria.
