The Cross River State Police Command has condemned the alleged harassment and extortion reportedly carried out by some officers attached to the Etung Division in Etung Local Government Area of the state.

The Command reacted following a viral video circulating on social media in which an influencer identified as Mc Okrika accused officers, including the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), of harassing and extorting two individuals — Israel Nwafor and Abraham Friday.

According to a statement by the Command, the incident allegedly occurred at a checkpoint near the Etung Divisional Headquarters on May 13, 2026.

The statement noted that the Commissioner of Police, Rashid B. Afegbua, expressed concern over the allegations immediately after being briefed on the matter and subsequently ordered an inquiry into the incident.

The Command stated that any officer found culpable would face disciplinary action in line with the extant laws and procedures governing the Nigeria Police Force.

The Commissioner of Police also directed that the alleged victims be invited to the Command Headquarters to provide firsthand information to aid a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into the allegations.

The Police Command further explained that Etung Local Government Area is a strategic border community adjoining the Republic of Cameroon, which requires heightened security measures to combat cross-border crimes, illegal movements, and activities of armed foreign groups, including Ambazonian separatists.

While reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and accountability, the Command stressed that allegations of harassment, extortion, or any form of unprofessional conduct against its personnel would always be treated seriously.

The statement assured residents that the Cross River State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property while upholding human rights and ethical policing across the state.
