The rapid growth of social media has created new opportunities for young Nigerians to express themselves, entertain audiences and build careers outside traditional forms of entertainment.
Among those making use of this opportunity is Shuaibu Isiya, popularly known as Shuaibu Dan Saurayi, a Hausa digital content creator and entertainer whose journey has grown from simple social media activity into a recognised presence in the online entertainment space.
Shuaibu’s experience began around 2019, when he used Facebook mainly to share personal photographs. At the time, his posts attracted limited attention, but the experience gradually developed his interest in understanding how social media audiences interact with content.
Rather than abandoning the platforms because of the low engagement, he continued exploring different forms of content.
By 2021 and 2022, Shuaibu had started creating videos more consistently. He experimented with comedy, storytelling, relationship-themed content and situations drawn from everyday life.
His decision to create primarily in Hausa also became an important part of his identity as a creator.
For many Hausa-speaking audiences, social media has become more than a place for communication. It has increasingly become a source of entertainment and a platform for discovering creators who communicate in a familiar language and reflect experiences that audiences can easily relate to.
Shuaibu’s content has benefited from this growing digital audience.
His videos have reached viewers across different social media platforms, while his presence has expanded beyond a single platform to TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and YouTube.
The growth has also demonstrated how consistency can gradually transform an ordinary social media account into a platform capable of reaching a much wider audience.
Unlike the traditional entertainment industry, where access to television, radio or major production companies can determine how far a young entertainer can go, social media has lowered some of those barriers.
A creator can produce a short video, publish it from almost anywhere and potentially reach thousands or even millions of viewers.
This changing environment has allowed young Nigerians such as Shuaibu to experiment with their creativity while developing their own audiences.
However, building a career in the digital space also comes with its own demands.
Content creators are required to remain consistent, understand their audiences and continuously adapt to changes in the way people consume online content.
For Shuaibu, this journey has taken place alongside his education.
He is currently studying Computer Science at university while continuing to develop his work as a digital creator.
The combination of technology and content creation has given him an opportunity to operate within two rapidly developing areas, as digital platforms continue to influence entertainment and communication in Nigeria.
His story also comes at a time when Hausa-language digital content is attracting increasing attention from audiences online.
The rise of creators producing entertainment in indigenous languages suggests that digital platforms are not only changing who can become an entertainer, but also expanding the type of Nigerian stories and languages that can reach large audiences.
For Shuaibu Dan Saurayi, the journey remains ongoing.
What began with a few photographs and limited engagement on Facebook has evolved into a growing career in digital entertainment, built around Hausa comedy, storytelling and relatable experiences.
His experience provides another example of how social media is changing the entertainment landscape in Nigeria and giving young creators the opportunity to build audiences on their own terms.
