The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Chapter, has elected new executive members to lead the union for the next three years.

The newly elected members include Comrade Usman Muhammad Binji of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) Sokoto Network Centre, who was elected as Chairman. Nasiru Muhammad Bello of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) returns for a second term as Secretary of the council.

The election, which was conducted peacefully under the supervision of the Vice President (Zone A) of the NUJ, saw Comrade Binji emerge victorious with 86 votes, defeating Comrade Surajo Dalhatu Sifawa of Rima Television, who garnered 29 votes.

Comrade Binji and other executive members, who were unopposed in their respective positions, were presented with certificates of return and sworn into office shortly after the elections at the NUJ Press Centre along Zuru Road on Saturday.

In his inaugural speech, the newly elected NUJ Chairman pledged to uphold the union’s principles and work toward a more vibrant, inclusive, and effective organization.

He also promised to prioritize the welfare and development of members, create opportunities for training and capacity building, advocate for better working conditions, and promote a culture of excellence and professionalism within the industry.

Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Comrade Binji urged collective efforts to address the issues facing the union, the profession, and society. He also expressed gratitude to the Sokoto State Government for its unwavering support and commitment to creating a conducive environment for progress.

Earlier, in his speech, the outgoing chairman, Comrade Dalhatu Abdullahi Safiyal Magiri, reflected on his council’s historic yet challenging tenure, which began on December 22, 2021.

He stated that the accomplishments of his tenure speak for themselves and offered his full support and best wishes to his successors. Magiri urged the new chairman to lead with courage, serve with integrity, and always remember that the strength of the NUJ lies in the collective will of its members.
