In a bid to achieve the mandate of the ministry and sustain its current achievements, Directors in the Federal Ministry of Health & Social Welfare have been urged to ensure the effective delivery of healthcare services to Nigerian citizens.
This call was made by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Daju Kachollom, mni, during a recent retreat for Directors held at the Carlton Swiss Hotel, Enugu, Enugu State. The statement was issued over the weekend in Abuja by the Ministry’s Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, Mr. Alaba Balogun.
The theme of the retreat was “Strengthening Leadership for Effective and Efficient Health and Social Welfare Governance.”
While addressing the Directors, Kachollom highlighted the importance and objectives of the retreat in ensuring the efficient and effective provision of healthcare services.
She explained that the retreat aimed to facilitate strategic planning, assess the current position of the Ministry, set long-term goals, and outline the necessary steps to achieve them. It also focused on team building, strengthening interpersonal relationships, enhancing communication, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
Describing leadership as a driving force behind organizational success, the Permanent Secretary urged the Directors to prioritize transparency, embrace innovation, foster partnerships, and build empowered, sustainable teams to ensure a system that effectively meets its goals.
“In this regard, we must fully embrace the ongoing reforms and take ownership of them. We must adopt the principles of the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan 2021–2025, with particular focus on the new Performance Management System (PMS), which is designed to track both individual performance and our collective contributions to ministerial and national development goals. At its core, performance management aligns individual goals with organizational objectives, ensuring a unified direction,” she added.
Furthermore, Kachollom encouraged the Directors to prioritize mentoring and succession planning, describing them as key strategies to strengthen and sustain the Ministry’s progress.
Major highlights of the retreat included PowerPoint presentations by participating Directors, further demonstrating top management’s deliberate intent to enhance leadership skills and address the challenges facing the Ministry while offering actionable solutions.
