The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, on Thursday, July 17, 2025, commissioned the newly renovated Christ Assembly Nursery and Primary School in Ajegunle, Lagos, as part of the Service’s ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts under the “Customs Cares” initiative.
The project, executed by the Tincan Island Port Command, was described by the CGC as a “deliberate investment in the future of the nation.”
“We are happy that our intervention has provided a better learning environment for our students. More importantly, this reflects renewed hope that under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, our children can aspire to greatness in a conducive environment,” Adeniyi said.
According to a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, the event was attended by senior Customs officers and key stakeholders, including the Olumakinwa of Apapa Kingdom, Oba Muhammed Maruf; Chairman of Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government, Mayor Fatai Ayoola; and Lagos State Commissioner for Basic Education, Jamiu Ali-Balogun.
Adeniyi revealed that the Customs Cares programme aims to reach 50,000 schoolchildren across the country in 2025 through the distribution of uniforms, school bags, raincoats, and other learning materials. “So far, we’ve impacted 10,000 children, with 3,000 in Lagos alone. Today, we are reaching another 2,000 pupils,” he said.
He also outlined five additional focus areas under the initiative, including healthcare, access to potable water, creative industry development, and ICT support—stating that the Service remains committed to reciprocating the support of host communities.
In his remarks, Assistant Comptroller-General (ACG) Charles Orbih, the Zonal Coordinator for Zone A, emphasized the importance of community engagement. “As the foremost zone, we have a responsibility to pioneer impactful initiatives others can emulate,” he said.
Also speaking, Comptroller Patience Ibrahim, who heads the Customs CSR Unit, said the event reaffirmed the Service’s enduring commitment to building strong relationships with local communities.
Comptroller Frank Onyeka, the Customs Area Controller of Tincan Island Command, appreciated the stakeholders who made the project a reality.
The school’s Headmistress, Esther Ogunfuyi, expressed gratitude to the Service, describing the renovation as a reflection of its “belief in the potential of our pupils and commitment to quality education.”
The event also featured cultural displays by pupils, goodwill messages from dignitaries, and the formal presentation of educational materials.
