From Umar Danladi Ado, Sokoto
The Sokoto State Police Command has arrested three notorious members of the cult group known as “Sai Malam,” exposing their online recruitment through a private WhatsApp group.
The arrests, carried out by the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit under State Commissioner of Police CP Ahmed Musa, followed a meticulously planned operation on Friday, November 28, 2025, at about 11:00 p.m.
DSP Ahmad Rufai, the Police Public Relations Officer, said the primary suspect, Usman Shu’aibu, and two accomplices provided detailed confessions during interrogation. They revealed that the cult lured and initiated youths into criminal activities via a WhatsApp group called “Red Chamber.”
Investigations confirmed that the group engaged in witchcraft, ritualistic practices, pursuit of demonic powers, homosexuality, organized thuggery, and violent acts.
In response, the police issued a strong advisory urging parents and guardians to monitor their children’s smartphone and social media activities, discuss the dangers of online groups, and report suspicious behavior to authorities.
CP Musa said, “We want to assure the good people of Sokoto that we have been listening to their concerns. The arrest of these suspects demonstrates that their calls for action have been answered.”
He added, “Our efforts have disrupted a key cell of this notorious group, and we remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of every citizen.”
The Command confirmed that investigations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang and called on the public to continue cooperating with security agencies.
The police reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property through intelligence-led policing, community engagement, and relentless pursuit of criminal elements.
