From Umar Danladi Ado, Sokoto
Youth groups and professional associations in Sokoto have been urged to actively engage in sporting activities as a means to curb terrorism and social vices among young people.
The call was made by the District Head of Gagi, Dr. Sani Umar Jabbi, at the closing ceremony of the inter-professional associations five-a-side football competition organized by the Sokoto Professionals Network (SPN) at the Abdullahi Shehu Sports Arena.
Describing the initiative as timely and commendable, Dr. Jabbi urged other groups and associations to emulate SPN by partnering with government and corporate bodies to organize sporting events that address youth idleness.
Speaking on behalf of the chairman of the board of incorporated trustees of SPN, Dr. Rilwanu Bello Nagwari, who represented the sports subcommittee, assured that the network would continue to prioritize sports development.
“SPN remains committed to meeting the sports needs of youths in Sokoto, with many tournaments planned to strengthen their physical and health abilities,” he said.
The final match saw Sokoto Professionals Network FC defeat Nigerian Bar Association Sokoto FC 4-0 to claim the championship.
The tournament featured eight professional groups, with the Nigerian Bar Association securing second place.
The event highlighted the potential of organized sports to engage youths positively and reduce exposure to social vices and extremist influences.
