No fewer than seven journalists and public servants have died in a fatal road accident along the Billiri–Kumo Road in Gombe State.
The victims were returning from a wedding ceremony in Kaltungo when the accident occurred.
Those who lost their lives were identified as Zarah Umar, Manu Haruna Kwami, Isa Lawan, Musa Tabra, Aminu Adamu, Adams Danladi and Judith Kutus.
Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, described the incident as a “heart-rending tragedy,” saying the deaths of the victims were a huge loss to the state.
In a condolence message, the governor said the deceased were dedicated professionals who contributed significantly to public service and the media sector.
“This tragedy is deeply painful. We have lost committed journalists and public servants whose services to the state will be greatly missed,” Yahaya said.
He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and assured those injured in the accident of the state government’s support.
The accident has thrown the state into mourning, with colleagues, friends and residents expressing grief over the loss.
The state government said it would provide necessary assistance to the bereaved families and ensure that injured victims currently receiving medical attention are adequately supported.
