The Kano State Security Neighbourhood Watch Corps has arrested four suspected drug offenders in Gwale Local Government Area of the state as part of efforts to curb criminal activities and social vices.
The Commander-General of the corps, Lt. Col. Aminu Yusuf Abdulmalik (retd.), disclosed this while parading the suspects on Monday in Kano.
He said the operation followed a formal complaint by concerned residents over the increasing activities of some individuals allegedly involved in illicit drug dealings in the area.
This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by Yusuf Abubakar Ibrahim, Director of Public Enlightenment, Kano State Security Neighbourhood Watch Corps, a copy of which was made available to The Triumph.
According to him, the corps acted on credible intelligence and reports from members of the community before launching a coordinated operation.
Abdulmalik said the exercise was led by the Director of Operations, Habibu Balarabe Madigawa, and Sector Commander 1, AWO Kabiru Isyaku, leading to the arrest of the suspects.
“The Kano State Neighbourhood Watch Security Corps remains resolute in its mandate to safeguard communities and support efforts aimed at curbing all forms of criminality and social misconduct in the state,” he said.
He added that the corps would continue to work closely with communities and relevant security agencies to ensure that criminal elements had no safe haven in Kano.
The commander-general stressed that professionalism, discipline and commitment would remain the guiding principles in all operations carried out by the agency.
The suspects were identified as Ahmad Sani, Halifa Umar, Sadiq Umar and Sulaiman Abubakar.
According to the corps, the suspects reportedly confessed to their involvement in the alleged illegal activities and pleaded for leniency, promising to desist from unlawful acts.
The agency said the suspects would be handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.
It also urged residents to continue providing timely and useful information that would assist security agencies in combating crime and maintaining peace, law and order across the state.
