From Umar Danladi Ado, Sokoto
The Sokoto State Government has approved the procurement of motorcycles for distribution to civil servants at a 35 per cent subsidy.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu disclosed this during the 2026 May Day celebration held at the Giginya Memorial Stadium in Sokoto.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Alhaji Idris Mohammed Gobir, said the decision followed a request by the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
He explained that the initiative is part of efforts to reinvigorate the civil service and promote a more productive, motivated, and dignified workforce.
Aliyu commended civil servants for their continued support and urged them to remain punctual, dedicated, and committed to their duties.
In his remarks, the Head of Service, Alhaji Abdulkadir Ahmad, expressed satisfaction with the cordial relationship between the state government and organised labour, noting that it has helped sustain industrial harmony.
He also appreciated the government for restoring several incentives previously suspended, describing it as a demonstration of genuine concern for workers’ welfare.
Similarly, the State Chairman of the NLC, Comrade Abdullahi Aliyu Jungul, commended the government for its support to civil servants since assuming office and pledged workers’ continued cooperation.
However, he appealed for an upward review of pensions for retirees, noting that some still receive as little as N4,000 to N5,000 monthly.
Jungul also urged the government to allocate houses acquired from the Federal Government in the Kwannawa area to prevent their deterioration.
Meanwhile, workers in the state endorsed Governor Ahmed Aliyu for a second term ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The endorsement was announced during the Workers’ Day celebration by the NLC chairman, who cited the administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare.
“You have done nothing wrong to us and have been tremendously supportive. There is no justification for a change of government in 2027,” he said.
He highlighted the full implementation of the N70,000 national minimum wage and the regular payment of salaries, pensions, and gratuities.
Jungul also presented the governor with an “Award of Excellence,” noting that it was the first time the NLC/TUC in the state would confer such an honour on a sitting governor.
Responding, Governor Aliyu expressed appreciation for the award, describing it as a motivation to intensify efforts toward improving workers’ welfare.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening labour relations and sustaining reforms aimed at building a dignified civil service.
