The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), Sokoto State Branch, has conducted an induction programme for newly appointed management staff and newly elected executive members as part of efforts to strengthen leadership capacity and improve humanitarian service delivery across the state.
According to a statement issued by Nafiu Muhammad Lema, Communication and Advocacy Adviser of the Sokoto State Branch, the induction programme was held at Sokoto Guest Inn following a bye-election conducted to fill vacant positions within the organization.
The event attracted national officials of the Society and other key stakeholders, who gathered to familiarize the new officers with the principles, responsibilities, and operational guidelines of the Red Cross Movement.
Speaking during the programme, the Secretary General of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Dr. Abubakar Ahmad Kende, stressed the importance of commitment, accountability, and teamwork in advancing humanitarian activities across the country.
He explained that the induction was designed to equip the newly inducted management staff and executive members with the knowledge, skills, and leadership qualities required for the effective discharge of their duties.
Dr. Kende commended the Sokoto State Branch for its unwavering commitment to humanitarian service, emergency response, community support, and volunteer development.
He urged the newly inducted officials to uphold the fundamental principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and voluntary service.
“Efforts to address national emergencies and humanitarian challenges are the responsibility of everyone,” he stated.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Sokoto State Branch expressed gratitude to the national leadership of the organization for its continuous support and guidance.
He also acknowledged the valuable contributions of the Society’s Movement partners, including the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
He described the induction programme as timely and crucial to strengthening the branch’s operational effectiveness and enhancing service delivery to vulnerable communities across Sokoto State.
The Chairman disclosed that the branch is currently implementing the Malnutrition Emergency Appeal Programme in three local government areas to tackle urgent nutritional challenges and improve the well-being of children and families affected by malnutrition.
He further revealed that, with support from the IFRC through the Rapid Response to Risk (RRR) Flooding Initiative under the Disaster Management Department, the branch has been actively responding to flood-related risks and building resilience among vulnerable communities.
The Chairman also acknowledged the support provided by the ICRC, including the renovation of the branch secretariat and salary support for management staff.
He charged the newly inducted officials to remain dedicated, disciplined, and transparent in carrying out their responsibilities while working collectively to advance the mission and vision of the Nigerian Red Cross Society.
Highlights of the programme included presentations on the structure and operations of the Red Cross Society, humanitarian principles, leadership responsibilities, effective community engagement strategies, as well as accountability and integrity in humanitarian work.
Among dignitaries who attended the event were Dr. Adamu Babale, National Finance and Resources Mobilization Adviser; Hajiya Ummu Muhammad Mustapha, National Programme Planning Adviser; Mallam Sufyan Mutallab, Coordinator of National Society Development; Andronicus Adebayo; and Augustine Mamedu.
