The New Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Dawakin Tofa State Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly, Hon.Ibrahim SB Maisalla has called on leaders at all levels of government to prioritize the welfare of citizens, uphold justice, and demonstrate greater accountability in governance.
In a Democracy Day message issued on Thursday to commemorate the June 12 celebration, Maisalla paid tribute to the heroes of Nigeria democratic struggle, describing their sacrifices as the foundation upon which the nation democratic system stands today.
He noted that democracy goes beyond the conduct of elections, stressing that true democratic governance must be anchored on justice, transparency, accountability, security and the protection of citizens’ rights.
According to him, many Nigerians are currently grappling with economic hardship, rising living costs, unemployment and worsening insecurity, challenges that continue to affect families and communities across the country.
The Dawakin Tofa Assembly hopeful said the nation democratic gains would only be meaningful when governments respond effectively to the needs and concerns of ordinary citizens.
Maisalla also emphasized the importance of transparency in public service, stating that allegations of corruption and financial misconduct should be thoroughly investigated, with justice served fairly and without bias.
“Anyone found guilty of wrongdoing should face the consequences of their actions, while those proven innocent must be treated fairly and accorded due process,” he stated.
He further urged leaders to embrace integrity, compassion and visionary leadership, adding that government policies should focus on protecting lives and property, creating employment opportunities, supporting farmers and businesses, improving education and healthcare services and ensuring equitable distribution of national resources.
The NDC candidate described Nigerian youths as the country’s greatest asset, insisting that with proper investment, quality education and economic opportunities, young people could drive innovation, development, and sustainable economic growth.
Maisalla therefore called on governments at all levels to place national interest above political considerations and take concrete actions capable of restoring public confidence in governance.
He stressed that Nigerians deserve practical solutions to their challenges rather than empty promises, adding that the time had come for leaders to translate their commitments into measurable results.
The assembly candidate concluded by praying for peace, unity, good leadership and continued democratic progress in Nigeria as citizens marked the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
