Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has approved the constitution of governing councils for state-owned tertiary institutions and appointed the Emir of Dutse, Muhammad Hamim Nuhu Sanusi, as the Pro-Chancellor of Sokoto State University.
The appointments, which take immediate effect, are aimed at strengthening institutional governance and improving the administration of higher education across the state.
The newly constituted governing councils will oversee several key institutions, including the College of Nursing and Midwifery, Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Shehu Shagari College of Education, and Shehu Shagari University of Education.
Other institutions covered by the appointments are the College of Agriculture, Wurno; Sultan Abdulrahman College of Health Technology, Gwadabawa; the College of Legal and Islamic Studies; and the College of Nursing Sciences, Tambuwal.
According to a statement issued by the Director-General of Media and Publicity to the Governor, Abubakar Bawa, Alhaji Yusha’u Kebbe has been appointed Chairman of the Governing Council of the College of Nursing and Midwifery, while Prof. Aminu Salihu Mikailu will head the Governing Council of Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic.
Similarly, Ambassador Sahabi Isah Gada will serve as Chairman of the Governing Council of Shehu Shagari College of Education, while Prof. G. V. Ardo has been appointed Chairman of the Governing Council of Shehu Shagari University of Education.
The governor also approved the appointment of Alhaji Yusuf Jega as Chairman of the Governing Council of the College of Agriculture, Wurno, and Alhaji Yusuf Muhammad Goronyo as Chairman of the Governing Council of Sultan Abdulrahman College of Health Technology, Gwadabawa.
In the same vein, Justice Ladan Buda Tsamiya will chair the Governing Council of the College of Legal and Islamic Studies, while Prof. Hamza Muhammad Maishanu has been named Chairman of the Governing Council of the College of Nursing Sciences, Tambuwal.
The governing councils comprise academics, government officials, representatives of relevant professional bodies, and principal officers of the respective institutions.
They are tasked with providing policy direction, strengthening governance structures, and promoting the overall development of their institutions.
Governor Aliyu expressed confidence that the newly constituted councils, alongside the Pro-Chancellor of Sokoto State University, would play a vital role in enhancing the quality of tertiary education and institutional governance across Sokoto State.
