The Managing Director of the Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB), Dr. Mohammed S. Khalil, has disclosed that the board has settled the outstanding 16-month allowance owed to sanitary inspectors employed as casual staff by the previous administration.
Dr. Khalil made the disclosure while responding to a team of journalists recently over allegations raised by some REMASAB sanitary inspectors.
He confirmed that the affected workers were indeed engaged by the previous administration, but explained that the current administration, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, took a sympathetic approach by providing the necessary funds to clear the backlog.
According to him, “Alhamdulillah, with the mercy of Almighty God, we have successfully settled the issue.”
The REMASAB boss further stated that about 80 percent of the protesters were not holders of environmental health certificates.
However, he said Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, out of concern for the less privileged, directed the board to offer employment opportunities to interested individuals as street cleaners with a monthly salary of N20,000.
He noted that despite the opportunity provided, none of the protesters accepted the offer.
Meanwhile, the leader of the protesting group appealed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, expressing confidence that the governor’s commitment to supporting the downtrodden would encourage him to consider their request.
He appealed to the governor for further intervention, saying they believe he would respond positively to their plight.
