The Catholic Bishop of Yola Diocese, Bishop Stephen Dami Mamza, has called on the Federal Government to demonstrate stronger political will and take proactive measures to tackle the worsening insecurity across Nigeria.
Bishop Mamza made the call while speaking to journalists shortly after the closing Mass of the 2026 Diocesan Pastoral Council held in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.
Expressing deep concern over the continued killings, kidnappings, banditry, attacks on communities, and other criminal activities across the country, the cleric said the persistent insecurity has left many Nigerians living in fear and uncertainty.
He noted that despite repeated assurances by government authorities, the security situation in many parts of the country has shown little improvement, raising concerns about the commitment of those responsible for protecting lives and property.
“The government must go beyond promises and take decisive action to address the security challenges confronting the nation.
“The safety of Nigerians should remain the foremost responsibility of this administration and everyone concerned,” Bishop Mamza said.
“We are tired of failed promises,” he added.
The bishop urged the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve the welfare of security personnel, and enhance collaboration among security agencies to effectively combat criminal elements.
He also called on Nigerians to continue praying for peace while supporting lawful efforts aimed at restoring security and promoting national unity.
At the end of the annual meeting, priests, religious men and women, and lay representatives from across the diocese reviewed the activities of the local Church and deliberated on issues affecting both the Church and the nation.
