The Media and Disability Care Initiative (MDCI), in collaboration with the Yobe State Committee on Drug Abuse Control, the State Drug Abuse Control Focal Office, Yobe State Drugs and Medical Consumables Management Agency (YODMA), and other non-governmental organisations, has organised a roundtable discussion and public awareness campaign to address the rising cases of drug abuse, gender-based violence (GBV), and domestic violence in the state.
Speaking during the event, Chairman of the Yobe State Committee on Drug Abuse Control, Barrister Sale Samanja, stressed the need for collective efforts among stakeholders to combat drug abuse and its related social consequences.
He explained that substance abuse contributes significantly to crime, domestic violence, and other social challenges, urging government institutions, media organisations, civil society groups, and community leaders to deepen collaboration in prevention, advocacy, and rehabilitation programmes.
Also speaking, the Yobe State Focal Person on Drug Abuse Control and representative of YODMA, Hon. Saidu Jakusko, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to reducing drug demand through continuous awareness campaigns, community engagement, and partnerships with relevant stakeholders.
Jakusko advised young people to stay away from illicit drugs and called on families to take active roles in identifying early signs of substance abuse and supporting prevention efforts.
Participants at the roundtable highlighted the importance of the media in providing accurate information, creating awareness, and promoting positive behavioural change among citizens.
They further advocated stronger support systems for survivors of gender-based and domestic violence, as well as improved community-based interventions to protect vulnerable groups, particularly persons with disabilities.
The event attracted representatives from government agencies, media organisations, disability advocacy groups, civil society organisations, development partners, and other stakeholders committed to promoting safer and healthier communities across Yobe State.
