The Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Prof. Ayo Omotayo, has paid a courtesy visit to the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, where he formally apologised to the Berom nation and the people of Plateau State over his earlier remarks.
According to Prof. Omotayo, it was never his intention to blame the Berom people or cast aspersions on any community. He acknowledged that his remarks had been interpreted in a manner that caused concern and distress.
Speaking shortly after the meeting with journalists on Tuesday, the NIPSS Director-General expressed deep regret over the unintended offence caused by his comments and offered an unreserved apology, while seeking the understanding of the royal father and the entire Berom nation.
He reaffirmed that NIPSS remains an integral part of its host community and is fully committed to promoting peace, unity and stability in Plateau State.
He added that the institute is working closely with relevant security agencies to ensure that investigations into the recent security incident at NIPSS are conducted professionally.
Prof. Omotayo called for calm and restraint among stakeholders, urging them to avoid actions and narratives capable of heightening tensions.
He stressed the importance of dialogue and collective responsibility in sustaining peace.
The meeting was attended by members of the Plateau State Traditional Council, leaders of thought and other prominent members of the Berom nation.
The NIPSS Director-General noted that the institute’s relationship with its host communities is built on mutual respect and shared progress.
He highlighted some of NIPSS’s interventions, including educational support programmes, youth empowerment through Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and digital skills training, school mentorship initiatives, and the promotion of girl-child education.
Prof. Omotayo also expressed appreciation to the Gbong Gwom Jos for his leadership, wisdom and continued support, pledging to strengthen engagement with the Berom people in ways that promote trust, inclusion and social cohesion.
Responding on behalf of the Berom Elders Council, its Chairman, Dr. Dachollom Jambol, commended the reconciliation efforts demonstrated by the NIPSS leadership.
He appealed to the Plateau State Government to constitute an independent panel to conduct a thorough investigation into the recent attack, stressing that a comprehensive inquiry would help establish the facts, ensure justice and promote lasting peace.
