The Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KCPC) has received complaints from members of the public regarding the sale of solar panels that do not meet the power output specifications indicated on their labels.
It was containing in statement issued by Director public enlightenment of the Agency Jamilu Mustapha Yakasai, where made available to Journalists.
Speaking on behalf of the complainants, Mallam Yusuf Sani stated that they visited the Council to express their concern over the activities of some solar panel dealers who allegedly mislead consumers by labeling their products with power ratings that do not correspond to the actual output of the panels
.
He explained that when such panels are tested using standard power-measuring equipment, a significant discrepancy is observed between the labeled capacity and the actual power generated.
According to him, this can damage batteries used for energy storage and, in some cases, pose the risk of battery explosions.
Mallam Yusuf Sani further alleged that many of these products are imported without adequate quality assurance or compliance with the required standards and testing procedures.
He therefore urged the Council to intensify market surveillance in order to protect consumers, especially at a time when the use of solar energy is rapidly increasing.
In his response, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KCPC), Dr. Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, commended the complainants for their public-spirited effort in safeguarding consumers’ interests.
He assured them that the Council would conduct a thorough investigation to establish the facts of the matter and take appropriate action in accordance with the law.
Dr. Ibrahim Garba Muhammad also cautioned solar panel dealers to ensure that the power ratings displayed on their products accurately reflect the actual performance of the panels
He emphasized that compliance with product standards is essential to protecting consumers’ rights, ensuring product quality, and preventing deceptive trade practices.
He reaffirmed KCPC’s commitment to working tirelessly to protect the people of Kano State from substandard products and goods that fail to meet approved quality standards, while promoting fairness and accountability in the marketplace.
