A traditional ruler and Igbo community leader, David N. Onwere, has condemned the recent killings of fellow Africans in South Africa, describing the attacks as barbaric and contrary to the ideals of African unity.
Speaking on the incidents, Amb. (Dr.) David N. Onwere said South Africans should remember the immense support and sacrifices made by other African nations during the struggle against apartheid and the fight for the freedom of Black South Africans from colonial rule.
He noted that many countries around the world have benefited from immigrants, adding that Nigerians and Ghanaians were among those who played significant roles in South Africa’s liberation struggle.
According to him, immigrants continue to make meaningful contributions to South Africa’s socio-economic development.
He therefore urged the Nigerian government to take appropriate diplomatic measures against any country that fails to protect the lives and rights of Nigerian citizens.
On the appointment of holders of the traditional Eze title outside Igbo land, Chief Onwere welcomed the development, saying it would help reduce conflicts among Igbo communities living in other parts of Nigeria and abroad.
He explained that the title of Eze should be conferred on individuals with the consent of the community they are expected to lead, rather than through personal or unilateral appointments.
Chief Onwere also commended the administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf for its infrastructural development projects in the Sabon Gari area of Kano, particularly road construction, installation of solar-powered streetlights, drainage facilities, and other public amenities.
