The Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Professor Haruna Musa, has expressed excitement over plans by Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu University (KHAIRUN) to honour him with a colloquium and conference, describing the initiative as a motivation to further promote teaching, learning, science and technology education.
The two-day event is scheduled to take place from August 18 to 19, 2026, at the Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata Auditorium, KHAIRUN premises in Kano.
Speaking shortly after the KHAIRUN management, led by its Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdulrashid Garba, unveiled plans for the event, Professor Musa reaffirmed BUK’s commitment to partnering with KHAIRUN and other institutions to promote higher education and advance science and technology to international standards.
He described the honour as timely and encouraging, saying it would further spur him to redouble his efforts towards improving teaching and learning while strengthening partnerships with relevant institutions within and outside Nigeria.
“Organising a colloquium and conference in my honour as the 12th Vice Chancellor is really appreciated and encouraging.
“The occasion is timely, and it also gives us an opportunity to interface and partner with other stakeholders in promoting higher education, not only in Kano but in northern Nigeria and the country at large,” he said.
Professor Musa noted that universities in Kano and beyond had long looked forward to a platform where public and private institutions could interact, exchange ideas and jointly chart a way forward for the development of higher education.
He expressed confidence that the communiqué and recommendations to emerge from the colloquium would contribute meaningfully to transforming science and technology education in Nigeria.
Earlier, the KHAIRUN Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdulrashid Garba, said the decision to organise the colloquium was driven by three major objectives.
According to him, the first objective was to honour Professor Musa as the 12th Vice Chancellor of BUK, while the second was to provide an avenue for universities in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states to appreciate BUK for its contributions to the development of higher education in the region.
Professor Garba observed that several universities in the three states could trace their development and establishment to the pioneering role played by BUK.
He added that the third objective was to create a platform to assess the development and impact of science and technology education, particularly in view of Professor Musa’s background as a chemist and his standing in the international academic community.
The KHAIRUN Vice Chancellor expressed optimism that the colloquium would produce practical recommendations that could be adopted by governments, universities and the private sector to strengthen science and technology education in the country.
He also announced the constitution of a committee comprising experienced members from KHAIRUN and BUK to ensure the successful organisation of the event.
Professor Garba expressed confidence that the calibre of members on the committee would contribute to the success of the colloquium.
The event is expected to bring together researchers, academics and other stakeholders from various fields, including engineering, information technology, medical sciences and pharmaceutical sciences, among others.
