The Sokoto State Governor, Dr Ahmad Aliyu, has approved the establishment of an Advisory Committee to investigate controversies surrounding utterances by some Islamic scholars in the state that allegedly led to a breach of peace.
This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Abubakar Bawa.
According to the statement, the committee will be chaired by Malam Yahaya Muhammad Boyi, the Sarkin Malamai, while Barr. Gandi Umar Muhammad will serve as Secretary.
Members of the committee include Malam Muhammad Isah Mafara, Malam Bello Muhammad Boyi, Prof. Mansur Ibrahim Sa’id, Malam Lawal Maidoki, the Commissioner for Religious Affairs, as well as representatives of Izala from Kaduna and Jos, Tijaniyya, Qadiriyya, Jama’atu Nasril Islam and the Sultanate Council.
The committee is mandated to critically examine the position of Shari’ah on the issues raised by Malam Musa Lukawa and advise the government accordingly.
It is also expected to submit its report to the government within 14 days.
The government said the initiative was aimed at promoting peace, unity and religious harmony in the state.
