The National President of the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), Dr Nasiru Gawuna, has congratulated the country’s junior women’s national team, the Flamingos, on qualifying for the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, currently taking place in Morocco.
The Coach Akeem Busari-led side defeated Brazil 3-1 on Wednesday night to qualify for the final for the first time, with Gawuna commending the players for making the country proud.
According to the former Deputy Governor of Kano State, the team’s qualification demonstrates that with adequate grassroots football development, which YSFON has been championing, Nigeria can go on to dominate world football.
“I’m highly excited with the performance of the girls. They have shown that Nigeria is blessed with abundant talents capable of making the country a global force in all aspects of sports. This is what YSFON has been championing over the years,” he stressed.
Gawuna, who is the NDC senatorial candidate for Kano Central Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections, however, charged the team to give their best and bring the trophy home.
“My charge to the team is that they should not be carried away by their victory against Brazil but should go all out on Saturday to defeat Japan and bring the coveted trophy home.
“I want them to realise that Japan is very good in women’s football and, as such, they should not take anything for granted when they meet the Asian giants on Saturday. I wish them good luck as they head into the final,” Gawuna concluded.
