The Nigerian Military has issued a warning about a new terror group operating in the northwestern states of Kebbi and Sokoto.
This group, Identified as Lakurawa believed to be linked to jihadi organizations in Mali and Niger, has reportedly exploited political instability in the region to infiltrate Nigerian territory.
In a statement on Thursday, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, explained that the group has taken advantage of the porous borders and difficult terrain to establish a presence in remote areas.
The instability in neighbouring countries, he added, has provided an opportunity for these groups to expand their influence.
While the Defence Headquarters has not disclosed specific details about the group’s activities or capabilities, it has assured the public that the military is closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures to counter the threat.
Security experts have expressed concern over the potential for increased terrorist activity in Nigeria’s border states as regional conflicts continue to escalate.
They emphasize the need for enhanced security measures and cooperation with neighbouring countries to address this growing challenge.
