The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has stated that the African Military Games, scheduled to take place from November 18 to 30, 2024, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, will not only demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to hosting world-class events but will also bolster national pride, enhance global recognition, and contribute to economic and sports development in the FCT.
General Musa shared this insight during a briefing with journalists in Abuja, outlining the event’s schedule, which will feature 25 nations, including Nigeria, and involve 19 sporting events across multiple venues.
He emphasized that the success of the Games hinges on the collective support of Nigerians, urging the public to show hospitality and rally behind the teams.
The CDS highlighted that the African Military Games would not only showcase the strength, unity, and readiness of participating countries but would also spotlight the continent’s armed forces through sports, promoting peace, cooperation, and partnerships among African nations.
“Hosting the African Military Games in Abuja is a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to peace and security in the region. It also presents an opportunity to demonstrate our capabilities as a host nation,” General Musa said.
The event, which will run from November 18 to 30, 2024, will provide a unique opportunity for Nigeria’s armed forces to display their skills, foster camaraderie among participants, and strengthen military cooperation across the continent.
“The Games will offer a platform for the armed forces of Nigeria to compete internationally, exchange best practices with their counterparts from other African countries, and build lasting relationships that will contribute to the overall security and stability of the continent,” he added.
While expressing appreciation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s continued support for the Armed Forces, particularly in hosting the African Military Games, General Musa called on citizens and stakeholders to collaborate with the military to ensure the success of the event.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis, assured that all necessary arrangements had been made to ensure the Games’ readiness and success. He expressed confidence that with the facilities in place, the event would meet international standards.
“The African Military Games have set a high benchmark for participation, competition, and organizational excellence, reflecting Nigeria’s capability as a host and its commitment to fostering unity and cooperation through sports,” Air Vice Marshal Marquis stated.
He further added, “The Games will provide a platform for the armed forces of Nigeria to compete at an international level, exchange best practices with their counterparts from other African countries, and build lasting relationships that will contribute to the overall security and stability of the continent.”
