Adamawa State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has organised a novelty football match between the executive and legislative arms of government as part of activities marking the 2026 Correspondents’ Day celebration.
Speaking at a press conference read by the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Comrade Umar Dankano, at the Press Gallery in Yola, the state capital, he announced that the two-day event is scheduled to hold from April 15 to 16.
Dankano said the celebration is aimed at commemorating and reflecting on the modest but impactful achievements of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the NUJ, Adamawa State Council, under the leadership of Comrade Ibrahim Muhammad Kado, who has just marked one year in office.
He stressed that Correspondents’ Day provides a unique opportunity for media professionals to pause and weigh their collective contributions toward shaping society.
He noted that it is a moment of reflection on how journalists have advanced public discourse, promoted accountability, and contributed to the social and mental well-being of the communities they serve.
He further explained that journalists continuously commit their physical and psychological energy to the noble task of informing, educating, and enlightening the public for societal development.
The Correspondents’ Chapel, often described as a microcosm of Nigeria, plays a critical role in agenda-setting for both those in positions of authority and the general public.
This responsibility is reinforced by Section 22 of the Nigerian constitution, which mandates the media to uphold accountability and good governance.
The Local Organising Committee has carefully curated a series of activities to celebrate and appreciate the dedication and professionalism of its members.
The programme includes a training workshop for 100 practicing journalists focused on reshaping the narrative of election reportage ahead of the 2027 general elections.
There will also be a medical outreach programme open to both members and the general public, offering free health screenings, including tests for hypertension, hepatitis, HIV, and other essential health checks.
In addition, a novelty football match between the executive and legislative arms of government will be held to strengthen the cordial working relationship that has supported the journalists’ operations.
At the end of the event, an awards and recognition segment will honour outstanding colleagues for excellence in reportage, discipline, and professional conduct.
The chairman of the local organising committee therefore invites well-meaning individuals and organisations to join in making the celebration impactful and memorable, and to continue to uphold the ideals of journalism while contributing meaningfully to the progress of society.
