The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing gender-based violence (GBV) and protecting the educational future of girls across the state.
The Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kano State, Hon. Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude, SAN, made this known while delivering a goodwill message at the Kano State Stakeholders’ Education and Justice Sector Dialogue on the impact of gender-based violence on girls’ education, held at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano.
The Attorney General expressed deep concern over the disturbing reality that, in some cases, perpetrators of sexual violence are close relatives, including biological fathers.
He also highlighted the persistent challenge where families attempt to withdraw cases after prosecution has commenced, often due to societal pressures, noting that such actions undermine justice and accountability.
“While we continue to secure convictions, these cases sometimes create tensions within families, discouraging victims from coming forward. This is a challenge we must collectively confront,” he stated.
He further emphasized the commitment of the Kano State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, to inclusivity and gender equity, pointing to the increasing number of women occupying key leadership positions, including the Chief Judge, the Head of Civil Service, and several High Court Judges.
The Attorney General called on non-governmental organizations and development partners to strengthen collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, particularly in the prosecution of rape and other gender-related offences.
He stressed that sustained advocacy, institutional support, and collective efforts are critical to ensuring justice for victims and building a safer society for girls.
The dialogue, organized by The Inclusion Project with support from the Malala Fund in partnership with the Kano State Government, was attended by key stakeholders, including the representative of the Kano Emirate Council, Alhaji Bashir Mahe Wali and the Chief Judge of Kano State, represented by Honourable Justice Zuwaira Yusuf, among others.
The Kano State Ministry of Justice remains resolute in its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of women and girls in the state.
