From Joseph Aaegba, Yola
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adamawa/Taraba Area Command, has intercepted smuggled items worth N104.4 million within just four weeks.
The seized items include 36,835 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, contained in 1,219 jerry cans and 24 drums.
Also intercepted were 101 pieces of raw donkey skin packed in seven sacks, allegedly destined for illegal export to a neighbouring country.
While addressing journalists in Yola, the Area Comptroller, Garba Bashir, expressed grave concern over the growing trend of wildlife trafficking.
He warned that the continued illegal slaughter and export of donkeys could lead to the extinction of the species.
Bashir emphasized that the exportation of raw hides and skins is a violation of the Common External Tariff (Schedule 6) and Section 150 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023.
Providing details on the areas where the seizures occurred, he listed Mubi-Sahuda Road, Girei-Wuro Boki axis, Maiha Road, Belel-Farang, Gurin-Fufore axis, Apawa-Jalingo, and Gembu.
He noted that the seized petrol will soon be auctioned, with proceeds remitted to the Federation Account.
The Comptroller also decried the threats and harassment his officers face from smugglers but maintained that the Customs Command remains resolute in enforcing the law.
“Smuggling may not be completely eradicated, but I can confirm that in Adamawa State, it has significantly reduced. We urge those involved to abandon smuggling and engage in legitimate businesses,” he said.
